How to break up with someone you love?

so I've been dating this guy and have genuinely fallen for him. he seems to be growing distant and i feel as though he just wants it to end. neither one of us are confrontational so its basically coming down to whose going to have the back bone to end it. i would rather make things work but it seems pretty clear that he doesn't but how do you end something that you don't want to end? my biggest dilemma is i know im going to cry and well i don't cry in front of people. i never have i prefer to do that in the shower away from everyone where no one can see me as being vulnerable or weak. and i refuse to break up via the phone text email or any other way but in person. i guess the real question is how do i get a backbone and how do i approach this?
